Looking Beyond Nigeria; Child Sexual Abuse Across Sub-Saharan Africa
Child sexual abuse is not just a Nigerian issue; it affects many countries across Sub-Saharan Africa.
While each country has its own context, shared challenges make children vulnerable.
Poverty is a major factor. In some cases, families struggling to meet basic needs expose children to exploitation. This creates situations where abuse can occur unnoticed.
Education also plays a role. Schools can either protect children or expose them to risk, depending on their management. Without proper safeguards, children may face harm even in places meant to be safe.
Another issue is the lack of reliable data. Many cases go unreported, making it difficult to understand the full scale of the problem and respond effectively.
Across the region, efforts are being made to:
- Strengthen laws and policies - Raise awareness - Support grassroots organizations - Improve reporting systems
While progress is happening, much more needs to be done. Protecting children must remain a priority across all levels of society.
